Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles Out Now

CASTLEVANIA®: THE DRACULA X CHRONICLES™ NOW AVAILABLE

First Castlevania for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable System) Offers Three Games in One, Gorgeous 3D Graphics, and Timeless Side-Scrolling Gameplay
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - October 26, 2007 - Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. today announced Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles™ is now available in retail stores in North America. Developed exclusively for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles brings the groundbreaking PC Engine CD game Castlevania: Rondo of Blood™ in two different versions to North America for the first time ever-- the original 2D form along with an updated version incorporating 3D graphics and new gameplay elements. In addition, gamers will also receive one of the most highly treasured games in the Castlevania series, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night™ with redone voice-over, translation and content previously available only in the Japanese version of the game.

"We took full advantage of the PSP system, adding more content in a portable Castlevania than ever before," said Anthony Crouts, Vice President of Marketing for Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. "With the Dracula X Chronicles, not only does the package include two of the most popular entries in the Castlevania series to date, but it also includes a complete remake of a title that was previously only available in Japan. This massive collection of old and new Castlevania content is a great value for PSP gamers and fans of the series alike."

The legendary action game Castlevania: Rondo of Blood is reborn on the PSP system with incredible 3D graphics and classic side scrolling gameplay. In bringing the Japanese PC Engine CD classic to the handheld arena, gamers take on the role of intrepid vampire hunter Richter Belmont seeking the destruction of the maniacal Count Dracula once-and-for-all in this pivotal piece in the ongoing Castlevania saga.

Both the original version of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, localized in English for the first time and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, widely regarded as one of the most groundbreaking video games of all-time, are featured as unlockable items.

Players can battle through the game's more than 10 stages as either Richter Belmont or Maria Renard, each with their own unique skills and battle abilities. In addition to new 3D graphics, Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles will feature new character designs by renowned Castlevania visualist Ayami Kojima. The game will also introduce a new sound collection system that will let players find songs from both Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night and create their own custom soundtracks as they play.

Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles is rated "T" for Teen by the ESRB and available for an SRP of $29.99. For more information, please visit www.konami.com.

Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War Gold

BLADESTORM™: THE HUNDRED YEARS' WAR REACHES GOLD STATUS

KOEI Set to Release Medieval Action Game on November 6, 2007

Burlingame, CA - October 26, 2007 -- KOEI, recognized worldwide as the premier brand of strategy and action games, today announced that BLADESTORM™: The Hundred Years' War has achieved gold status, and will ship to North American retailers beginning November 6, 2007 for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system.

A free single player demo of BLADESTORM: The Hundred Years' War is available now on Xbox LIVE® Marketplace for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and on the PLAYSTATION® Network.

Set amidst a war-torn 14th century France, the demo delivers a taste of the action game's incredible battles where players will take direct command of entire military units. As a mercenary soldier, players will contract their services to the English or French; with the ultimate goal of achieving glorious fame and fortune.

For more information, please visit the re-launched minisite at www.koei.com/bladestorm.
About Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War
In the 14th century a quarrel over English succession to the French throne escalated into what history would call the Hundred Years' War. This ongoing war had exhausted the standing armies of both sides and there was a growing dependence on mercenary soldiers.

As arrows rain from above, knights will charge on horseback, cannoniers will fire volleys at heavy infantry, and armies will collide in unprecedented scale. Immerse yourself in ferocious battles where an innovative action style enables you to defeat countless numbers of soldiers with one cleverly chosen attack command. Establish a reputation as a formidable warrior and leader of men, build your war chest and lure hardened warriors to your employ. Outwit your opponents and overwhelm them with dominating force to be the last one standing when the dust settles on one of history's greatest conflicts.

BLADESTORM: The Hundred Years' War delivers stunning visuals in 720p HDTV and in game Dolby® Digital audio. This game is rated "T" (Teen- Alcohol Reference, Mild Language, and Violence) by the ESRB. BLADESTORM: The Hundred Years' War is developed by KOEI's award-winning internal team, Omega Force.

I played the demo on the PlayStation Network and thought it wasn't quite the Dynasty Warriors clone I thought it would be, but I haven't put enough time into it to give it a proper preview/review.

Even Microsoft Is Making Money!

They've released their quarterly earnings and basically because of Halo 3 they managed to make a profit for that time frame. They haven't had an entire year of profit ever since they launched the original Xbox, but hey I guess if they can make hardware that doesn't self-destruct within a year it's all good. Note that the Zune is included in that bottom line. It pretty much costs as much as a 4 GB Nano, it can't be making them that much money can it?

Super Smash Bros Brawl To Feature Video Sharing And New Character Announced

First the new character is King Dedede from the Kirby games apparently. I don't recognize him, and chances are that you don't either, but apparently they found him compelling enough to have him included in the game. I hope KK Slider or Tom Nook (both from Animal Crossing) are next. I really do.

More importantly, I guess, is the ability to share 3 minutes of video with your friends. It's sort of hidden at the bottom of this post, but it's clearly there just to tease you that much more as you continue to wait out the most recent delay.

It's Time To Samba Again!

One of my all-time favorite Dreamcast games (right behind Phantasy Star Online) is/was Samba De Amigo, but I never had the maracas. The Wii version was announced not that long ago, but it looks like we're going to be seeing it Spring 2008, which is probably sooner than I expected. Still, I can't wait. I predicted the Wii with it's motion sensing controller would be a perfect fit for the games sequel well over a year ago, it looks like my prediction will come true soon enough.

Sony Is Losing A Crapload Of Money, Apparently Nintendo Is Finding It

Sony Revenue is up, but their overall losses are way up!
If they have to drop the price prematurely again I think the Japanese suicide rate is going to skyrocket as board members and shareholders all commit ritual suicide. The shame of it.

Nintendo on the other hand is raking in more money than they can count.

It's scary how much money the Wii and DS are making for Nintendo. Even though Halo 3 was a system seller for Microsoft, they just barely managed to edge out Nintendo for first place and that's considering that Nintendo still isn't even meeting demand yet. If they had more systems in stores, would Microsoft have been able to outsell the little white juggernaut that is Wii? This is going to be a spin filled holiday season on all three home systems.

Rachet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction Coming Early?

According to the good people at the PlayStation Blog it very well could end up in your local game store quicker than the street release date of October 30. Be on the look out for it if you're a fan of the series and apparently there are many otherwise they wouldn't have sold so many copies to this day.

Gears of War Goes Gold For Games For Windows

Wow, it's been a year since the Xbox 360 version came out, but it's finally made it's way onto the PC and if what I saw at E3 was any indication this version looks even better. I had a great time with it as I tried out the new modes and new maps. It made me want to get back into the game all over again. They've also added a new boss level. For all the details from the full press release check it out here: Gamerscore Blog

Guitar Hero III Finale Announced

It seems as though somehow the final challenge in Guitar Hero III was somehow leaked and now the song has been made public. That song indeed is: "The Devil Went Down To Georgia", if you want to hear the song before you play the game you can give it a listen to right here.

From the press release:

This song was composed and produced by Steve Ouimette, a 16-year veteran of the video game industry. He has scored original soundtracks for film, mobile media and video games. Since 2001 Steve has created over 5,000 ringtones and music for over 24 mobile phone games including HBO's The Sopranos, SpongeBob SquarePants and Alien vs. Predator. An accomplished guitarist, producer and composer, Steve is currently working on an MMORPG, a television series and another music based console game for release in Christmas 2008. In 2005, Steve formed 8th Wonder Productions. He is rapidly establishing himself as the leader in ultra-realistic re-records of songs from the 60's through today. Steve is working on several top rhythm based games for next generation systems.

Street Fighter IV and Bionic Commando!? Clean Up In Aisle 5!

Capcom seems to be on a bit of a revival lately and by lately I mean, two days ago. They announced both Street Fighter IV and Bionic Commando. What systems they're coming out on hasn't been specified, but I'll be willing to go out on a limb and say Xbox 360 and PS3 and possibly PC, while the Wii gets overlooked as a next-generation gaming system.

Anyway, check out Street Fighter IV here: Street Fighter World
Meanwhile, you can find Bionic Commando here: Bionic Commando

Nintendo Unveils Holiday Lineup For Wii and DS- Super Smash Bros Brawl Slips to 2008

Crap this is a long list. Granted a bunch of these games will probably be turds, but at least you can't say that they're not going to be supported by third parties again this time around. Oh and maybe I didn't mention it, but this is a partial list. The Wii is a juggernaut, a force to be reckoned with, and right about now it looks like nothing will be able to stop it. We'll be well into 2008 before the system is even readily available. Anyway, without further ado here's the list:

Monster Hunter 3 Exclusive To Wii

It seems that Capcom has no problem doing exclusives after all (See: Devil May Cry and Resident Evil 5) because Nintendo has thrown lots of money at them in order to secure an exclusive deal to get Monster Hunter 3 on the Wii and the Wii alone. So, you can cross off one more reason to buy a PlayStation 3. Weird that Capcom jumped on board, but maybe Nintendo just threw more money than they could resist at them. No word on whether it'll be online like the previous versions or not, but chances are it will, otherwise it'd be regressing backwards.

Sonic Joins Super Smash Bros. Brawl!

Wow! This was hidden for an awful long time and now makes me wonder what else Nintendo might have up their sleeve. How many more characters could they introduce between now and the December launch? Another dozen or so? Then I wonder if they can't manage downloadable characters for any that they can't squeeze into the game. How much more awesome would it make SSBB if they added a character once a month for the next year or so? I don't know whether they can even do that on the Wii or if they would if they could, but that would make a whole hell of a lot of people excited about getting the game on day one. Maybe even dethrone Halo 3 for the killer game of the year?

Guitar Hero III Songlist Updated 10/08

Have you seen this songlist from Guitar Hero III? There's been a lot of talk about the songs and music in Rock Band, but the one thing that kind of drags that down (at least for me) is that it has a lot of music previously found in the Guitar Hero games. The only thing that could possibly make Guitar Hero III any better (at least on the Xbox 360) would be if you could combine all the tracks from both games, so that you could have this one huge game with 140 songs or so. That would truly rock. Anyway, here's the list from the press release I posted at DreamStation.cc

· Same Old Song and Dance (by Aerosmith)
· Helicopter (by Bloc Party)
· Stricken (by Disturbed)
· Monsters (by Matchbook Romance)
· Before I Forget (by Slipknot)
· Kool Thing (by Sonic Youth)
· When You Were Young (by The Killers)
· Devil Went Down to Georgia (as made famous by Charlie Daniels Band)
· Sunshine of Your Love (as made famous by Cream)
· Holiday in Cambodia (as made famous by Dead Kennedys)
· Cliffs of Dover (as made famous by Eric Johnson)
· Hit Me with Your Best Shot (as made famous by Pat Benetar)
· Black Magic Woman (as made famous by Santana)
· Story of My Life (as made famous by Social Distortion)
· Pride and Joy (as made famous by Stevie Ray Vaughn)
· The Seeker (as made famous by The Who)
· Black Sunshine (as made famous by White Zombie)

In addition to the newly announced tracks, previously announced songs in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock include:

· Miss Murder (by AFI)
· Minus Celsius (by Backyard Babies)
· Sabotage (by Beastie Boys)
· Hier Kommt Alex (by Die Toten Hosen)
· Through Fire and Flames (by Dragonforce)
· In the Belly of a Shark (by Gallows)
· Welcome to The Jungle (by Guns N' Roses)
· Avalancha (by Heroes Del Silencio)
· Take This Life (by In Flames)
· Number of the Beast (by Iron Maiden)
· Ruby (by Kaiser Chiefs)
· Closer (by Lacuna Coil)
· Cult of Personality (by Living Colour)
· One (by Metallica)
· Knights of Cydonia (by Muse)
· Mauvais Garcon (by NAAST)
· Even Flow (by Pearl Jam)
· Lay Down (by Priestess)
· Bulls on Parade (by Rage Against The Machine)
· 3's and 7's (by Queens of the Stone Age)
· Suck My Kiss (by Red Hot Chili Peppers)
· Generation Rock (by Revolverheld)
· Raining Blood (by Slayer)
· Cherub Rock (by Smashing Pumpkins)
· Radio Song (by Superbus)

· I'm in the Band (by The Hellacopters)
· Anarchy in the U.K. (by The Sex Pistols)
· Reptillia (by The Strokes)
· Paint It Black (by The Rolling Stones)
· My Name is Jonas (by Weezer)

Wii Virtual Console Adds Neo Geo To The Mix

So, I posted this over on DreamStation.cc, but you can now download Neo-Geo games on the Wii Virtual Console via the Wii Shop Channel. Pretty big stuff if only because it means that the Virtual Console is a huge success. I suspect that they may very well be announcing Saturn games in the next six months. Panzer Dragoon Saga for $10 anyone? I'd finally buy it.

So, The Rumors Were True After All; Bungie Leave Microsoft

Bungie is indeed leaving the Microsoft umbrella. Microsoft will retain the Halo IP (Intellectual Property), and a stake in the company, but other than that they're free to do whatever they want. I'm sure Sony is knocking (beating?)on their door this very moment asking them to try something different, something they've never done before, something so innovative and unique that gamers just have to jump all over it...a shooter on the PlayStation 3. I'm calling for an announcement in the next three months if not sooner. Start the countdown clock now. Of course the game won't come out until 2009, but the hype will begin once that announcement is made.

E For All Badge Received

I got my E For All badge in the mail. I'm still not 100% sure if I'll be able to make it, but I'd like to go to check it out at least for one day. I want to compare it to the old E3. The only thing that's really holding me back at this point is that it's a public event. Not that I can't stand being in the public, but it's kind of hard to get any sort of "real journalism" done when there's a bunch of non-media members around. No offense to any of my readers, as if there were any, but at E3 it was easy, check that, easier to get around and get information. Especially at this past E3 when it was much more intimate. The problem comes from battling 30,000 other people for a spot in line when in theory I should have much more privileges than them because I've got media credentials. The other problem is that I haven't gotten one company saying they'd like to meet with me or visit their booth (actually I've gotten several companies, but nothing good...no offense 5 hour Energy, it's just that, I don't see what your product has to do with gaming) which isn't exactly a good thing with a little less than three weeks to spare. Maybe that means they're not really taking meetings? Maybe it means that I've got to set these things up on my own? Maybe it means no one is showing anything new? Maybe it means nothing at all? I'm not sure, but if they want to make this into a big media spectacle they've got to clean up their act. Hot on the heels of a substandard E3, the media would be more than willing to jump on something that provides all the games and spectacle that they've come to know and love over the past decade or so. Hell, a bunch of them were even willing to go to PAX, which didn't break much news either. I can't believe this will be much bigger/better. I could be wrong, I might even like to be wrong, but only if I end up going. If I do be sure to stick around and check out all my pics. -Red

New PS3 40GB Model Coming and the State of the PS3

Engadget.com
File this under rumor and under *sigh* because if Sony introduces yet another PS3 model I think they'll officially have pissed off just about every PS3 owner they've managed scrape up until now. Imagine the frustration of all those people who just paid $500 (60 GB) or even $600 on the 80GB model. I really think Sony is in a whole hell of a lot of trouble. Don't believe me? Look at the state of the PS3 in Japan: Yahoo! Games

Get Your Wii Remote Jacket Free Courtesy Nintendo

Apparently Nintendo wants you to not break your TV set and then sue them for making faulty equipment, despite the fact that it's mostly your fault that you couldn't use their remotes properly. I mean, you can't really sue Ford because you don't know how to drive and you wrecked can you? Anyway, if you've bought a Wii already Nintendo is providing you with free remote jackets. If you're interested check out: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/jacket/jacketrequest.jsp

You can request up to 4, and Lord knows how many people only have one remote, but will request four anyway. You'll need your serial number, so make sure to have that handy.

Review of Death Jr. and the Science Fair of Doom Now Up

It's been too long since I wrote something, but between work (the real one), E3 and all the follow up, home, family and everything in between, I finally managed to get something written down. I'm actually working on a whole slew of games, but this stuff takes time not only to play, but get down in writing. It should be coming at a faster pace. Someone want to pay me for this? If you do, I'd be a happy camper. Then I could focus on this 24/7. Until then, it's going to be my part time focus. Anyway, like a good amount of my reviews you can see it over at www.DreamStation.cc or click here: Death Jr. and the Science Fair of Doom. -Red

Guitar Hero II (Xbox 360) Thoughts

So, if you've actually looked at my blog before you would know that I got a copy of Guitar Hero II for all of $1.87, but that's neither here nor there. I figured since I didn't really have to write up this review for DreamStation.cc that I'd share my thoughts of the game.

My first impression was that this is really a cool game. It's fun and the selection of music is pretty big. There are something like 70 songs here, although more than half of them are songs from independent bands that you may or may not have heard of before. The latter being the case more often than not. I could really see this as a great party game especially if you have a second guitar. But if you're anything like me you don't have a second guitar and even if you did you might not have people willing to give the game a chance. Now, don't get me wrong I like it, but I can see it getting old after a couple of weeks only to make its way out when company makes their way over to my house or when a new set of downloads is available for me to look at and decide that the songs are overpriced and I don't recognize more than one per pack anyway.

Part of the problem that sets it back lies in the fact that you won't recognize all the songs, I'm not the biggest rock fan, so the stuff from earlier than the 80's is beyond my scope of knowledge. The stuff from the indies is nice, but I would've preferred more "hits" than what was included, because the way the game is it's about a 60/40 split. The other thing that brings it down a little is the lack of the actual music, what you get is a glorified karaoke version of each song. I believe they're fixing this with Guitar Hero III, though. For the record, I'll be getting my first glimpse of GHIII at E3 in July when I go down to Santa Monica to check out how far E3 has fallen or whether it's actually taken a step up.

All in all, if you're big into rhythm games and don't mind paying the $90 price tag attached to Guitar Hero II this is a fun game and worth it just to see the newbies try and tackle the game. The game itself isn't all that hard if you've got a little bit of musical background, I can manage 95% of the notes hit on the medium setting when I play a song for a second time. I'm not a guitarist, but I did play some instruments back in the day, so I'm sure that helps if only with the rhythm part of the game. Anyway, like I said, give it a go at a friends house or at one of those demo kiosks if you can. You'll have a rockin' good time.

(I can't believe I said that)

Most Expensive Xbox 360 Ever

Most Expensive Xbox 360 Ever

This ad from Rent-a-Center caught my eye just before I threw it away. You can see that in the big text it says $630 if it was a cash payment. $630 for a $300 system! What a rip, until you see that if you do their weekly payment method it comes out to a grand total of $1400. Eff that. I can't wait until I catch them advertising the PS3. Only $3600 after 200 payments of $12 per week. Rent-a-Center can kiss my arse. But it's still funny as all hell.

Text says this in case you're to lazy to click:

---Xbox 360---

-Next generation gaming system for cutting-edge action and gameplay
- 3 processing cores running at 3.2 GHz each
- Most games supported in 16:9 high definition resolution

So far everything checks out...Until you see that $630 cash price, but it gets worse because under that it says:

"$28.99 weekly
Number of payments: 49
Total of all payments: $1,420.51
PAY OFF EARLY AND SAVE!"

Holy crap that's one hell of a scam they got going on over there at the RAC.

Lazy bastard, next time click the damn picture. Digg my article from DreamStation.cc

Did You Know...?

Just to post something for today I was doing a bit of research for another interview today and did you know that my quote is still featured on award winning composer Winifred Phillips' web page? I interviewed her when the original God of War was released and she took one of my quotes from the preview I wrote up for God of War and placed it on her website under "Press" I feel so special. Even over a year later. This is the quote:
“As far as the music in God of War is concerned, it sounds like it came from a big budget Hollywood movie. The score is fantastic, and is a huge contribution to the feel of the game.” Redeema, Dreamstation
She left off the .cc after DreamStation, and it's sort of awkwardly worded, but she spelled my name right and she was a really nice lady and an awesome interview. You can see that quote under God of War here: Winifred Phillips.com

Phantasy Star Universe Review for Xbox 360

This review has actually been up for a week or two, but since I'm messing around with this blog I figured I could post it, too. After all who's going to stop me? I actually liked the game, the review may come off a little negative, but I did like the game it just doesn't come off as a full-fledged MMORPG or Action/Adventure, so it's stuck in no-man's land. Still, if you're a fan of the old Phantasy Star Online games for Dreamcast or GameCube, Xbox, or PC then you'll have a decent enough time with this one. Welcome to It Ain't Easy Being Red!

It's true, it's not easy being Red, so I'd like to welcome you to my new blog and introduce myself. I write for the website www.DreamStation.cc a video game site where I have been writing reviews for about four years. In addition to reviews I also post news, conduct interviews and have recently taken up the post of co-hosting our weekly (most of the time) podcast, so if you're reading this the chance that you know me from there is great. If you somehow stumbled upon my site for various other reasons be sure to come back as I try to let you in on what it's like to break into the world of video games as an independent site and someday a paid writer. So, that's my intro, feel free to look around, but don't interrupt me when I'm playing or you're just going to end up with your feelings hurt or crying like a five year old with a scraped knee.
